The question being explored here is: how did the political conflict between the military government and popular musicians of Brazil collide during the 1970’s? This is significant as it involves the U.S. backed dictatorship in Brazil and several major figures in Brazilian popular culture. Although a large amount of research exists on this topic, it largely relates to individual artists and genres. There appears to be few historians looking at the broader relationship between the government and the pop music sphere. However, these studies represent small parts of what can be linked into a wider picture of what was happening socio-politically during this period. This project draws on existing documents discussing firsthand accounts from musicians, government officials, and other related figures, as well as drawing from the songs themselves. This project discusses just one instance in a long running issue: the collision between government interests and artistic freedom. By examining this period in time, one can gain an understanding of how art is censored.
